A BRIEF HISTORICAL TIMELINE
A brief historical timeline of the Edinburgh St James site from the
creation of the New Town onwards.
21 year old unknown architect, James Craig, wins an architectural competition for the design of Edinburgh's proposed new town.
Craig's plan metamorphoses into the new familiar regular gridiron layout, and becomes the plan adopted formally by the Town Council. As a reward, Craig receives the Freedom of the City.
Work takes place on the New Town plan until the end of the 18th Century, 24 and 25 James Craig Walk tenements are constructed, terreces of individual properties at 5-21 York Place
St Andrew's Hall - formerly the Relief Church and United Free Curch - is constructed.
The final approvals are granted for the construction of the New St Andrew's House and St James Centre.
Construction of St. James Shopping Centre and New St Andrew's House is completed.
Queen Elizabeth II officially opens the St James Shopping Centre.
Civil servants move out of New St Andrew's House in 1995.
Multrees Walk mixed development, with its high fashion anchor store, Havey Nichols, opens adjacent to St James Shopping.
Office accommodation acquired in 2006 by TH Real Estate from Omega Land Ltd, and the shopping centre from Irish Investors Donegal Place. The components of land ownership are put in place to allow the comprehensive development of the site to be embarked upon.
Plans by developer TH Real Estate to redevelop the St James Shopping Centre are unanimously approved by councillors in Edinburgh. Proposal included the demolition of the existing centre and New St Andrew House, and the creation of a hotel and crescent shaped shopping galleria.
The St James Shopping centre closes in October and demolition on site begins with Laing O’Rourke appointed as the main contractor for the project. Alongside this, W Hotels is announced as are several pre-lets including Roomzzz and Everyman Cinema. John Lewis remains trading.
John Lewis opens Levels 4 and 5. Demolition underway.
Construction starts on site in earnest and steel framework goes up. Leith Street enhancements complete and FUSE launches.
Residential sales launch, structure completes and topping out will take place.
Edinburgh St James opens.
W Edinburgh, Roomzzz and Everyman Cinema opens. Residents move in.
